Reasons to end censorship in Australia

Freedom of expression

Freedom of expression is vulnerable in Australia because Australia has no constitutional or legislative bill of rights to protect freedoms. Despite the empty reassurances of politicians, freedom of expression in Australia is subject to the whims of the politicians of the day. In the United States by comparison, the Supreme Court has found that restrictions on expression are unconstitutional except in narrowly defined cases.
It is highly offensive that artists should have to apply to a government board to be allowed to express themselves.
Censorship allows socially conservative groups to inflict their particular views on others by prohibiting differing views. It is interesting to note that every censorship scheme seems to grant a blanket exemption for religious material. Would religious groups be so keen on censorship if they were the target?
An intolerant (censoring) society will drive away young, talented people and stifle development.
Censorship criminalises the expression of ideas, such as images, of acts which are themselves quite lawful. It is indefensible that an act can be legal, while possession of an image of that same act is illegal.

Censorship "protects women" by silencing women's voices. For example, the French films "Romance" and "Baise Moi". "Romance" was first banned and then unbanned, while "Baise Moi" was first permitted and then banned. Both of these films star women, are written by women, and are directed by women.
The Women's Electoral Lobby opposes censorship. The WEL policy on pornography (December 2000) is as follows:
WEL deplores the production, performance, display and distribution of any material which presents women and children as objects for violence or sexual exploitation.
WEL believes that education and attitudinal change are the appropriate remedies rather than the censorship of offensive materials.

No reputable (i.e. peer reviewed) study has shown that pornography (or other content) can cause harm to adults.
Ending censorship will not stop the authorities from tracking down child molesters and bringing them to justice.
